The situation gets complicated when Santiago drowns by accident at sea. Santiago’s ghost returns and asks Miguel to find his body and to bury him, according to the town’s rituals so his soul can rest in peace. Miguel has to choose: if he accepts, he will reveal his relationship with Santiago, only the people closest to the dead ones can perform the ritual, and he will ruin his marriage and his reputation forever. If he doesn’t, he will sentence his lover to eternal angst.

Miguel tries by all the means to conceal the situation, but the town’s obsession with Santiago’s disappearance, Mariela’s suspicions, which grow more certain, and the insistence of Santiago’s ghost to rest in peace, make him face his own fears and prejudices and to show to everyone around him, but especially to himself, that he is an honorable man and a man who keeps his word, even if that means loosing everything he has achieved.

December 24th dawns at the “Garden of Eden”, the De La Concha Family estate. As every year, Sofia de la Concha, the matriarch of the clan, has invited her sons, daugh-ters, and extended family to celebrate Christmas. Bernardo, Sofia’s youngest son, an audacious and unscrupulous stock exchange trader, is having an affair with his sister-in-law Esmeralda. He is also trying to avoid Uldarico, a dubious old-school local politician who also happens to be Esmeralda’s father. Rosario, Bernardo’s sister, still dreams the dreams of the Left, although nowadays she is little more than an anachronistic Marxist figure. Alvaro, a happy drunkard, who happens to be Esmeralda’s husband and Bernardo’s brother, lives satisfied as a middle ranked civil servant appointed by govern-ment friends.

The De La Concha family is economically bankrupt, but the only one aware of this little fact is Bernardo, who is in charge of the family’s assets. In a final attempt to save the opulent life he has always known, Bernardo has staked the family estate in a risky deal with Uldarico. On Christmas morning the deal goes sour and, unless Bernardo does something about it, Uldarico will join the Christmas party, uninvited, to claim his prop-erty.

Like every year end, the Family is performing the Christmas rite, completely ignorant of the social disaster into which Bernardo is leading them. Unfortunately for all, the family bankruptcy is not only economic. It is also moral; and amidst this moral decadence, they cling to the memories of happiness, prosperity and leisure of yesteryear. They deny real-ity with the same cheerfulness with which they avoid acknowledging the house’s collaps-ing drainage system.

The evening arrives and dark waters begin to emerge from broken sewers than can no longer be repaired. The garden, the kitchen, the bathrooms, the country mansion gradually becomes a stinking cesspit… and so does the family. As the clock ticks closer to midnight and the drinks flow faster, the characters merge and collide, closer and closer to a truth they can no longer avoid.

José María is a building worker and Rosa is a maid. They both are South American immi-grants (he’s Mexican, she’s Colombian) working in Spain. They met a few weeks ago and romance bloomed immediately.

Because of a misunderstanding, the foreman of a construction project fires José María. He waits until the end of the day to get his settlement, but the foreman does not give him any money at all. There is no one left in the place, and in an outburst of anger, José María beats and kills the man. José María goes to see Rosa at the house where she works and he tells her what happened. Rosa’s employers are about to return from a trip abroad. When José María is about to rush out through the back door, he changes his mind and decides to stay, without saying anything to Rosa. He hides in a small room in the attic of the past its prime mansion and decides to wait.

José María has nowhere to go and ends up staying in the attic for days, weeks, months, with the only company of a rat who runs about in the shadows. At night, he steals some food from the cupboard and from the garbage cans; he begins to live a life of silence and austerity, becoming the ghost of the house. When he is not doing push-ups or read-ing a book in the attic, José María listens, watches and spies.

Beyond being a suspense and voyeurism film, “Anger” is proposed as the story of an im-possible love, a “distant” love, with the starring couple living under the same roof.
